Explore Devil's Rock

Updated: Feb 20

Bucke Park Trail: 2.5 km, 45-60 minutes one way, easy

Devil’s Rock Trail: 1.15 km, 20-30 minutes one way, very easy

Devil’s Rock is one of the most beloved hiking trails in Temiskaming Shores. Located on Silver Centre Road, these trails lead to the majestic cliffs of Devil’s Rock, offering the most breathtaking view of Lake Temiskaming. This ancient rock face, sacred to local indigenous people, is part of a fault cliff dating back 2.2 million years. It towers 300 feet above the water and extends an equal depth below. During the silver rush era, mining tunnels were carved into the cliff, adding to its historical significance. Devil’s Rock served as the inspiration for the famous Hardy Boys book, The House on the Cliff, by Franklin W. Dixon. Leslie McFarlane, the Canadian ghostwriter of this popular youth series, lived in nearby Haileybury and included many symbolic references to the Temiskaming area in his writing. The scenic beauty of Devil’s Rock continues to inspire local artists, who capture its essence through stunning photographs and beautiful paintings.

Trails

There are two trails leading to Devil’s Rock, both ending at the same breathtaking lookout point.

The first trail begins at Bucke Park Campground. This hike is approximately 2.5 km and typically takes about 45 minutes one way. The trail steadily ascends from the lake, becoming rocky in sections and requiring careful footing. While occasional red ribbons mark the path, it can be harder to follow near the top. Just remember, the cliffs are to your left, and signs will alert you as you approach the summit.

The second trail is much shorter, spanning about 1.15 km and usually taking only about 20 minutes to hike. Located roughly 1.5 km south of Bucke Park on Silver Centre Road, this trailhead is marked by a small sign and parking lot on the side of the road. This route is more of a leisurely walk than a hike, with a wider path and a gentler incline compared to the Bucke Trail. The trail is well-marked, including a sign indicating the halfway point.

Dogs are welcome on these trails, but should be kept on a leash at all times.

Explore by Boat

Another great way to experience Devil’s Rock is by exploring the cliffs from the water. Viewing the cliffs from lake level offers a unique and captivating perspective, allowing you to appreciate the sheer beauty of the rock formations. From this vantage point, you can also get an up-close look at the old mining tunnels carved into the cliffs during the silver rush era.

Facilities

There are no amenities available at the Silver Centre Road trail access point. However, the visitor center at Bucke’s Campground offers snacks, water, and restroom facilities when open.
