Explore Latchford

One of Northern Ontario’s hidden gems is the small community of Latchford. Nestled between Cobalt and Temagami, and located just an hour and a half from North Bay, this charming town offers a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else. From attractions like the World’s Shortest Covered Bridge to scenic trails, viewpoints, and historic landmarks, there’s something in Latchford for everyone. This post highlights the

attractions that make Latchford a must-visit destination.

House of Memories

The House of Memories was built nearly 75 years ago by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests. What started as a home for Chief Ranger Phil Hoffman and his family has since become a window into Latchford's unique past, offering visitors a true walk down memory lane. Today, the museum is home to more than 2,000 exhibits featuring everything from 19th-century household items to logging and blacksmith tools, World War I and II memorabilia, railway exhibits, and geological specimens. For just a $2 admission fee, visitors can explore it all!

The World's Shortest Covered Bridge

A surprising fact you may not know about Latchford is that it is home to the world's shortest covered bridge. Spanning just four feet, this comically short bridge has even earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records!

The Community Centre

Located at 52 Mitchell Street, the Community Centre serves as a perfect spot for local sports, fitness, and municipal events. It features a multipurpose banquet hall for community gatherings and a fully equipped fitness centre.

Latchford Waterfront

Right along the shores of Bay Lake, Latchford Waterfront is the perfect place to spend your day. The scenic park offers a beachfront playground, a sheltered pavilion, a boardwalk, and a dock, making it a great spot for families to relax by the water and let their kids play.

Veteran's Park

Veteran's Park is a scenic and historic rest stop along Highway 11 overlooking the Montreal River. Located beside the town's municipal office, it offers visitors an excellent view of the Sgt. Aubrey Cosens VC Memorial Bridge. The bridge commemorates Latchford's very own World War II hero, Sgt. Aubrey Cosens, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth's highest military honour.

Ottawa Temiskaming Highland Trail

If you're an experienced hiker looking for a challenge, consider exploring the Ottawa Temiskaming Highland Trail. Starting just off of Highway 11, this 142km backpacking route is renowned as one of the most rugged and challenging trails in the province. However, those seeking a more leisurely outing can still find plenty of other trail options throughout the area. Latchford Dam

Built more than a century ago, the Latchford Dam was originally constructed to improve navigation on the Montreal River for the logging and mining industries. After being completely modernized and rebuilt, it’s now used to regulate the water levels of Bay Lake to support boating, recreation, tourism, and municipal water supplies.
