Explore New Liskeard Waterfront

Updated: Feb 13

Time: 30-45 minutes

Distance: 3.10km

Welcome to the ultimate walking tour along the New Liskeard waterfront! Our journey begins at the top of the iconic Wabi Bridge, leading you through the picturesque New Liskeard Boardwalk, highlighting 15 remarkable landmarks along the way, and ending at the Carter Antila Memorial Skatepark. Throughout this adventure, marvel at the town's storied monuments such as the inspiring statue of Shannen Koostachin, discover dining gems like 28 on the Lake, serene parks such as Algonquin Regiment Memorial Beach Park, and excellent sport facilities including the Lions Court. Spanning approximately 3.1km, this route perfectly encapsulates the scenic allure of life along the shores of Lake Temiskaming.

Wabi Bridge

The Wabi Bridge stands on the outskirts of downtown New Liskeard. The Bridge was constructed in 1963 over the Wabi River, which links to Lake Temiskaming, providing access to a marina, extensive boating opportunities, and exceptional fishing. Named after Joachim Wabigijic, an Algonquin First Nations man residing near the river's mouth, the bridge and river hold historical significance.

Waterfront Boardwalk

The Waterfront Boardwalk stretches along a significant portion of New Liskeard’s scenic shoreline and will help guide you through most of this walking tour. Extending approximately 2 kilometers, it showcases the true beauty of Temiskaming Shores and offers the community a unique and cherished connection to Lake Temiskaming.

Riverside Place

The Riverside Place, found at the mouth of Wabi river, serves as the perfect spot for community events to take place. In the summer months, from June to October, it hosts the Riverside Farmers Market every Saturday morning. Year-round, this versatile venue accommodates a variety of events including weddings, dances, banquets, and more.

New Liskeard Marina

The New Liskeard Marina is the perfect place to dock your boat and enjoy local amenities along the boardwalk. Whether you're docking for a day or planning a longer stay, the New Liskeard Marina promises an unforgettable experience, blending natural beauty with warm hospitality along scenic Lake Temiskaming.

28 on the Lake

28 on the Lake, formerly Casey's Grill/Bar then Rooster’s Bar and Grill, is a family-friendly restaurant nestled along the scenic New Liskeard boardwalk. As the only dining establishment on the shores of Lake Temiskaming, it offers a unique lakeside experience. In the warmer months, guests can savor their meals on the patio with stunning waterfront views.

Pool and Fitness Center

The Waterfront Pool and Fitness Centre is a great place to exercise. The building is air conditioned and provides you a stunning view of the lake while completing your workout. There's a great selection of equipment to choose from, as well as an indoor pool with a water slide, a squash court, and an outdoor basketball court.

Inukshuk

The Inukshuk was placed along the New Liskeard Waterfront in honor of the 2010 Olympic torch relay. This relay route spanned over 1,000 communities across Canada, bringing the torch to New Liskeard on December 31, 2009. The Inukshuk is a celebration of the community, made possible with contributions from Miller Paving Ltd., Allstone Quarry Products Inc., and the city of Temiskaming Shores.

Lions Court

Resurfaced in 2022, the New Liskeard Lions Court is the ideal destination for summer sports enthusiasts. The facility boasts three tennis courts, four pickleball courts, and a full-sized basketball court. With lighting available on demand until 10 PM each evening, you can enjoy your favorite activities well into the night.

Rotary Splash Pad

July 5th of 2024, the Rotary Splash Pad celebrated its grand opening, becoming the latest addition to the vibrant New Liskeard Waterfront. This exciting new facility, developed in partnership between the Temiskaming Shores and Area Rotary Club and the City of Temiskaming Shores, and major donors One Foot Forward and Frog's Breath Foundation, offers a refreshing escape for families and children of all ages.

The Snack Shack & Mini Putt

Conveniently located along the beautiful New Liskeard waterfront, this family-friendly destination offers delicious snacks and an entertaining mini-golf course. Whether you're looking for the perfect poutine or a fun activity for all ages, the Snack Shack & Mini Putt provide the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenic views of Lake Temiskaming.

Whittle Park

Just behind the Snack Shack & Mini Putt you can find the “Park for Whittle People”. Built in memory of Marilyn Whittle, Whittle Park is a great spot to bring your kids on a lovely summer day. It’s conveniently placed along the Waterfront Boardwalk and just a few steps away from the New Liskeard beach.

New Liskeard Beach

New Liskeard beach offers the perfect spot to cool off on a hot summer day. With its sandy shoreline and panoramic views of Lake Temiskaming, this beach provides an idyllic setting for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. The well-maintained facilities, including picnic areas, playgrounds, and nearby boardwalk, ensure a fun and relaxing experience for visitors of all ages.

Statue of Shannen Koostachin

At the far end of the boardwalk stands a bronze statue honoring Shannen Koostachin, a young Indigenous activist who tragically passed away. Shannen was a high school student in New Liskeard due to the lack of a school in her remote Cree community of Attawapiskat, and is remembered for her passionate advocacy for equitable education for First Nations children in Canada. The statue, crafted by Sudbury artist Tyler Fauvelle and unveiled in 2015, captures Shannen’s determination and spirit. It stands as a powerful tribute to her impactful campaign, Shannen’s Dream, and her unwavering dedication to justice and education for her people.

Algonquin Regiment Memorial Beach Park

Located at the far end of the boardwalk, Algonquin Regiment Memorial Beach Park stands as the ultimate destination for sports and recreation. This vibrant park features a children's playground, three beach volleyball courts, two baseball fields, and two soccer fields, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

Carter Antila Memorial Skatepark

Behind the baseball fields at Algonquin Regiment Memorial Beach Park, you'll find the Carter Antila Memorial Skatepark. This skatepark was built in memory of Carter Antila, whose dream was to have a local skatepark. The Antila family, volunteers, and the City of Temiskaming Shores collaborated with the community to raise the necessary funds and support the design and construction of this remarkable skatepark. The project, which cost nearly half a million dollars, officially opened in June 2014.
